What is Cranksgiving?
We like to describe it as a casual bike ride, a scavenger hunt and a food drive all rolled up into one fun event!  Cranksgiving was started in NYC in 1999 and there are now over three dozen Cranksgivings held in North America that are collecting food for food pantries in their community.
 
ActiveIndy hosted the first Cranksgiving here in Indy in 2012 and last year there were nearly 100 riders that collected 500 pounds of food!

How does it work?
Riders will be given the locations of places in and around downtown Indianapolis where they will ride and gather food items that are carried back to the start/finish location and donated to a food pantry.  Sounds easy enough…right?Here’s the thing – locations are not announced until you arrive on-site and there is no predetermined route – or even an order in which you must visit the stops.

Best we can tell, you’ll be riding ~10-15 miles – but that is up to you!  Your mission is to figure out the best route to these locations, purchase the food item specified and bring your bounty of nourishment to the start/finish area safely.

As always, IndyCog will have their team of Cranksgiving routing ambassadors using their awesome Ride Guide on site for anyone needing help with their plan of attack.

Where does it start?
The start/finish location this year is the Indy Bike Hub at historic City Market, located at the corner of Alabama & Market streets.  We can’t think of a better place to host an event that is about food – after all this location has served as our city’s marketplace for over 190 years!
 
If you will be driving to the event, City Market has plentiful parking options right across the street.

What does it cost?
Pre-registration for the ride is $15 per person and children under the age of 12 are free!  Then expect to spend another $5-$10 during the ride.Registration the day of the event is $20 per person.

Your registration fee “pre-purchases” some of the food you will be gathering at locations that are not set up for financial transactions.  At check-in, you will be provided trading tokens you’ll trade for the food at these stops.  The other stops are set up to take payment (cash or credit cards).

Where is the food going?
Second Helpings has been transforming lives through the power of food since 1998.  They operate a food rescue program that provides meals to over 60 social service agencies that feed the hungry.  They also have a culinary training program for disadvantaged adults.
 
In a city that has many great stories to tell, the story of how Second Helpings started is one you should know – and you can find it over on their website here!
 
What should I bring?
Bring a friend!  Bring three friends!  Bring the family!  Of course everyone will want to bring a bag & a bike lock.We will also have a social media photo scavenger hunt contest again this year, so get make sure you connect with the event on Facebook & follow #cranksgivingindy on Twitter.

Don’t Have a Bike?

8:30 am - Cranksgiving Check In and On Site Registration opens. Riders receive their manifest, trading tokens & sign the ride waiver.

9:00 am – Indy Winter Farmer’s Market Opens – come early and browse the market!

9:20 am - Final Ride Instructions & Announcements

9:30 am – Riders Depart

10:30 am – Riders begin arriving back at City Market

11:00 pm – Afterparty Begins at Tomlinson Tap Room & Upper Mezzanine of City Market

11:30 pm – Raffle Prize & Costume Contest Winners posted in Tomlinson Tap Room

12:00 pm – Ride Concludes
